These DRG stars were in a terrible state at the end of World War II, especially regarding the streamlined fairing. After the fairings were removed and the engines reworked, the 0110 proved a valuable contributor to the DB fast train service. After various modernizations and reconstructions, especially with respect to the necessary replacement of the boilers, a total of 34 locomotives were upgraded to oil firing in the late 1950s. These engines could handle long-distance runs of up to 700 km.

In 1968 the class 0110 was reclassified as 011 (coal) and 012 (oil). The last of these 140 km/h fast and 1730 kW (2350 HP), coal fired, and 1818 kW (2470 HP), oil fired, engines were retired only in 1975.

Of the 55 locomotives originally built, ten have survived until today, four of these are still operational.
