The class 011 locomotives were among the most powerful steam locomotives on the German Federal Railroad. In the standard design program of the German State Railroad they arose from the requirement for a fast, powerful locomotive with a maximum speed of 150 km/h (94 mph). In 1939 the German State Railroad ordered 205 units of this class. Only 55 were delivered, however; the remainder became victims of the rearmament program. All 55 units survived the Second World War.
