Between 1906 and 1923 a grand total of 3956 passenger service locomotivesof the P8 type were delivered to the Prussian State Railways (KPEV) and other European railway companies, from various German manufacturers. The Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRG) listed them under the class BR 3810-40 whilst in their service. Built as type 2'Ch2 these locos had a working pressure of 51.6 Mp, and a developing power of 1180 HP; they could run at a top speed of 100 km/h. Their good running qualities and the large numbers produced made these locos the mainstay of passenger service in Germany for over 50 years. Under their new classification as Br 038, the German Federal Railways (DB) took the last loco (038 772-0) out of service in 1974. The Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) having previously finished using their last 11 locos in 1973.
