In the 1950s the German Federal Railroad developed new storage battery powered railcars (ETA) for operation in commuter traffic on non-electrified routes. On the class 515 (ETA 150) the heavy battery with a current of 440 volts was located under the car body. Its capacity was sufficient for 300 to 500 kilometers (187,5 to 312,5 miles). Two electric motors powered a truck. The maximum speed was 100 km/h (62,5 mph). Most of these storage battery railcars were in operation until the end of the 1980s in the original red paint scheme.
