Additional information

Steam locomotive S 3/6, Royal Bavarian State Railways, in green livery.

Model of the S 3/6 01, locomotive and tender bodies plastic, frame die-cast metal, drive on two tender axles and via shaft on all three engine drive axles, motor with flywheel, locomotive wheels metal.

In 1908 the first engines went into service. At the time nobody would have guessed that these engines would still be ordered as late as 1931. But that the S 3/6 was a powerful and well-designed locomotive was already apparent in the trial runs. Trains pulling 420 t (about 9 or 10 fast train coaches) easily reached 135 km/h, running was extremely smooth, and fuel consumption low. This was due to the four cylinder compound super-heated steam engine, which also later allowed 800 km long runs without decoking.

To avoid possible engine problems, however, maximum speed was limited to 120 km/h.

Also of interest is the driver's cab interior with its two round fire doors, as also found in the Württemberg C. From the outside, the large cylinder blocks and peculiarly shaped smoke box door identified the S 3/6. And, of course, the typical Maffei brim-stacks. This class was justifiably the pride of the Bavarian railways.

She had 1770 HP and a maximum axle load of 16 t.
