At the beginning of the 20th century the locomotives employed on the steep grades of the Bavarian State Railroad no longer met the requirements for hauling freight. The Maffei Company was therefore given the contract to design and build a powerful tank locomotive for these routes. The result was the Gt 2 x 4/4. At a length of 17,700 mm or 58' 27/32" and with an output of 1,470 horsepower or 1,080 kilowatts, it was the largest and most powerful tank locomotive in Europe at that time. The Mallet design with two high pressure and two low pressure cylinders enabled it to achieve a high degree of thermodynamic efficiency.
