Old-Timer Locomotive with Tender. Former German State Railroad Company (DRG) class 34. Formerly the Bavarian class B VI. With DELTA electronic circuit. High-efficiency motor with bell-shaped armature. 2 axles powered. 4 traction tires. Detailed running gear with outboard frame and Stephenson valve gear. Permanent coupling between locomotive and tender. Standard coupler pocket on the rear of the tender, with electrical connections for car lighting. Free-standing lanterns. Length over buffers 16.3 cm (6-7/16").
The once proud express locomotive of Bavaria, that had even pulled royal court trains as the B VI, led a rather modest existence after the First World War. The last remaining units were gathered by the German State Railroad along with different other provincial railroad locomotives with the same 2-4-0 wheel arrangement into the catch-all class 34. The DRG's numbering plan for 1924 shows only two Bavarian B VI units in addition to a few B V, B IX and B X units that were reclassified. After that all traces of them were lost. The technical features of these locomotives, almost 60 years old then, were still quite recognizable even in the black and red DRG paint scheme: the external frame with wheel wells or the Stephenson valve gear with Hallsch cranks. The Westinghouse braking system and the narrow smokestack had been installed as early as the 1880s.
All of the locomotives in the class 34 were still basically usable for passenger service. They served chiefly as a reserve motive power for newer classes of regularly scheduled locomotives that had been dropped from service or that were not yet ready for service.
