The German Federal Railroad class 78 came out of the Prussian T 18. It was used chiefly for passenger trains in regional traffic and could operate equally fast in forward or reverse. This made push/pull commuter traffic possible with it. In fact, railroad historians praise the design as one of the most robust. The first locomotive was built in 1912. In 1970 there were still 17 units in service on the German Federal Railroad.
