A total of 25 class 1812 engines were purchased by the DB in 1974/75 for cross-border traffic between south-western Germany, France, and Luxembourg.
The engines were equipped for operation at 15 kV and 162/3 Hz as well as for the SNCF and CFL net at 25 kV and 50 Hz, and have pantographs with pickups of differing widths.
