The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) class 1016 is a representative of the second generation of the EuroSprinter family. The "Taurus" locomotive features an extremely high level of power. This holds true for hauling the heaviest freight trains as well as important passenger traffic. With a peak output of 7,000 kilowatts, which corresponds to over 9,500 horsepower, this powerhouse reaches a maximum speed of 230 km/h or 144 mph.
Krauss Maffei Transportation Technology supplied the mechanical part of the locomotive. The high-speed running gear is a joint development of Siemens Transportation Technology, Inc. and Krauss Maffei Transportation Technology, Inc. The final assembly was done at the ÖBB's Linzs shops. The individual components were delivered here from Munich, Graz and Knittelfeld. Every two weeks a finished Taurus left the shops in Graz. A total of 75 units were built in the first production run.
