In the mid 1960s a number of prototypes were developed that eventually lead to a typically Austrian locomotive, the classes 2043 and 2143.

These engines are largely similar and many spare parts are interchangeable. An interesting difference between the two classes is that the 2043 is a two-stroke and the 2143 is a four-stroke, which means, of course, that they also sound different. The 2043 was built by Jenbach, the 2143 by SGP.

The diesel electric 2043 actually has three diesel motors, two 1500 HP motors drive the engine, and one motor is used for train heating and compression. The axle load of 17 tons meant that the locomotive could also be used on branch lines. Originally the engine was registered for a top speed of 100 km/h, later this was increased to 110 km/h. Four engines (2043.555-558) were specially adapted with magnetic brakes for service on the steep Erzberg route. Some of these were, however, later removed again.

Toward the end of 2003, the first major series of retirements were undertaken, so it will be up to model railways to ensure the engine's immortality.
