Diesel locomotive BR 220 - DB

Mixed traffic diesel locomotive class V 200 (V 220) of the DB. Due to good experience with diesel-hydraulic locomotives of the V 80 class, the DB started developing a powerful 2000 hp engine for express passenger and freight train services in the early 1950s. The increase in power regarding the V 80 was achieved by double traction and reinforcement of motor performance. After all tests had been completed a total of 81 units were put into service in two series as of 1957.

This model is the exact reproduction of an engine of the first series (V 200.006 to 055). On delivery (marking and decoration of era III) these engines had the marking "Deutsche Bundesbahn" in relief and trims on both sides. To avoid rust formation and to facilitate mechanical washing, both these decorations in relief were removed and replaced by painted trims and the DB logo. Until the mid-eighties all engines in this class, i.e. 220 as of 1968, were taken out of service. Part of the engines which were in good condition were sold to foreign administrations, mostly to Switzerland and Italy. Another part was used for services on civil engineering sites in Saudi-Arabia. The V 200.002 is maintained in good condition as a museum locomotive of the DB.
